The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) is a component of the National Institutes of Health. NIAID supports basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose and treat infectious diseases and also conducts research on basic immunology, transplantation and immune-related disorders, including asthma and allergies. For more than 50 years, NIAID research has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions of people in the United States and around the world. Patients enrolled in NIAID clinical research protocols are hospitalized for protocol related medical care at the NIH Clinical Center. At one time some patients enrolled in NIAID clinical research studies received protocol- related medical care from NIAID attending physicians supplemented by clinical training fellows from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) subspecialty training programs. Later it was concluded that a more effective use of resources would be to utilize postgraduate medical residents. This is a non-personnel services contract to provide Postgraduate Medical Residents. The Government shall not exercise any supervision or control over the contract service providers performing the services herein. Such contract service providers shall be accountable solely to the Contractor who, in turn is responsible to the Government.
